Announcing the 2009 Commuter Challenge!

Looking for a way for your organization to try smarter ways of getting to work? Want to introduce some friendly competition at the same time? Take the Commuter Challenge!

Now through June 30, participants can pledge to take transit, share a ride, telework, bike or walk. Challenge yourself or others- i.e. "you have to breakdance on the light rail if I take transit more than you this month!"

Bring the Commuter Challenge to your workplace

  1. Host a Commuter Fair. You supply the table and we'll provide everything else.
  2. Display Commuter Challenge posters and pledge forms in high-traffic areas.

Get free resources: Request materials and schedule a Commuter Fair with our online order form.

Free lunch hour Biking + Walking Commuter Clinic

This is a great way to get ready for this year's Commuter Challenge and biking and walking season. We'll have experts on hand to answer your questions about choosing the right gear, planning your route, stretching, connecting to transit, staying clean and safe and doing basic bike repairs.

Bring your helmet for a free fitting, and be sure to enter to WIN a bike tune-up!

St. Paul Transportation Summit a success!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our first annual Transportation Summit. Our varied partners and presenters generated a lot of good questions and discussion that spilled over into the networking time.

"I especially enjoyed the variety in presentations and the testimonies from those who have applied TDM efforts and succeeded!"

-Transportation Summit attendee

Watch, view and listen: We've posted video and photos of the event so you can check out anything you missed or want to hear again.

Thanks to Brad Baso for photographing!

Good news: MN got $600M in stimulus money
Bad news: Most of it is funding highway expansion

Mn/DOT and the Metropolitan Council are considering a plan that would spend the minimum required on transit and pedestrian projects, and spend the majority of the metro area money, $220 million or more, on two highway expansion projects (TH610 and a new I-494/TH169 Interchange).

Whatever the pros and cons of these highway projects, the region should not neglect the importance of improving sidewalks, intersections, signals, and other pedestrian and transit facilities to meet the travel needs of all citizens, including elderly and people with disabilities. Now is the time to invest in the mobility and independence of all Minnesota travelers.

What you can do:
Contact Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) members before April 15 and let them know you support funding transit, pedestrian and transportation projects over highway expansion.

Smart Tip: New personalized transit trip tools

Save time by customizing Metro Transit's powerful Trip Planner to meet your specific needs. The two new tools below allow you to make shortcuts for your most common trips.

For your daily trips
Difficulty level: Easy

Set the Trip Planner to remember your default starting point and/or destination. This way, whenever you visit the Trip Planner from your computer you're just one click away from instant schedules!

Here's how: If you've ever planned a trip using the planner, you're already an expert! If not, what are you waiting for? Start by planning a trip and then click the "customize my trip planner" link on the upper right corner of the results page.

For your organization
Difficulty level: Medium

Help people reach your location or event easily using transit. Add this tool to your website to automatically use your location as the destination or starting point.

We added a customized Trip Planner to our website, allowing visitors to plan their transit trip to our office in one click!

Here's how:
You'll need to include some custom code from this webpage into your website. Do it yourself if you know what that means, or send the link to your webmaster.

St. Paul first in Minnesota to adopt Complete Streets

Last month the St. Paul City Council unanimously adopted a resolution for a Complete Streets policy making us first in the state!

The policy, which was introduced by Councilmember Russ Stark (Ward 4), will help to ensure that streets in St. Paul are designed and built for safe movement and crossing by users of all ages, abilities and modes (including biking, walking and transit).

Timing: The resolution requested that the Planning Commission create guidelines for implementing Complete Streets in St. Paul by January 1, 2010.
