Envisioning a St. Paul Greenway

Attendees get involved at the recent St. Paul Greenway meeting

On July 28th, St. Paul Smart Trips and the St. Paul Greenway Committee co-hosted an event entitled "Envisioning a St. Paul Greenway" at the Linwood Recreation Center. The event advocated for a proposed off-road trail connecting the Midtown Greenway to downtown St. Paul.

There was a contagious air of energy and excitement for the project, with over 120 people packed into the gymnasium. After presentations by Smart Trips representative Laura Baum, Greenway Committee member Paul Nelson and Councilman Russ Stark the attendees broke off into smaller groups to share their own ideas. Missed the event?

Moving forward

Despite some legal setbacks, the St. Paul Greenway Committee plans to continue meeting monthly (the 2nd Wednesday of each month) to advocate for a biking and walking facility through St. Paul. In the coming months, the committee will share comments and petition signatures with elected officials, the public and partner organizations. To join the committee, e-mail laura@smart-trips.org.

Meet Becky and James, bike delivery dynamos!

Becky Harnik and James Ford at Smart Trips HQ building custom kits to order

In the six weeks since we started delivering customized transportation information to Highland Park residents, Becky Harnik and James Ford have delivered a whopping 650 Smart Trips Kits by bicycle. Say hello if you see them on your street!

Originally from the Washington D.C. area, the most surprising thing Becky has discovered while doing deliveries for our Smart Trips Highland Park program is that hills actually DO exist in the Twin Cities! She just graduated from Macalester College with a double major in Environmental Studies and Geography.

James is a Minneapolis native and enjoys the hills in Highland and seeing the excitement on people's faces when they receive their Smart Trips Kit. When not busy delivering for us he studies Spanish, Portuguese, Business Education and Psychology at the University of Minnesota.

Book Review: Carjacked

How much do we really spend on our cars and why do we keep buying newer versions of the same thing? Carjacked, the new book by the Catherine Lutz and Anne Lutz Fernandez, chronicles our national obsession with the automobile. It is exciting, informative and "should be required reading for anyone with a driver's license."

St. Paul's Commuter Challenge winners

St. Paul Heart Clinic employee Amanda Menk with her new Amazon Kindle.

Congratulations to everyone who was among the nearly 15,000 people who participated in this year's Commuter Challenge. Together we saved 53,000 gallons of fuel and prevented an estimated 500 tons of C02 from being released into the air we breathe.

Special congratulations also go to our St. Paul grand prize winners: Amanda Cantu (iPod Touch) with Admission Possible, Peter Grasse ($50 REI gift card) at 3M, Kay Kwang ($50 GoTo card) with Ramsey County and Amanda Menk (Amazon Kindle) from the St. Paul Heart Clinic.

Extend your Challenge! The main promotion has ended for the year but you can still win a $50 gift card in the weekly drawings. Just use the Commuter Challenge Trip Tracker for each week you make trips without your car!
