Special opportunity: Be in the Winter Carnival!

Join
us and our local partners in celebrating walking, biking and busing all year round. Help light up the night and kick off the Winter Carnival!

Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade
THIS FRIDAY, January 22 @ 5:30pm

Join a community of walkers for a leisurely guided walk to the State Capitol, where we'll be greeted by hot air balloons and festivities!

Bring a homemade sign: Express your excitement about walking (i.e. "I walk in winter," "Our family walks every day," "Me gusta caminar")

Bring illumination: Carry or decorate yourself with reflective materials and lights. We'll also have free blinky lights on hand.

Be a part of it! Meet us at the James J. Hill House (map)
at 4:30pm to be a part of the special "Shovel Brigade" or 5:00pm for general participation.

Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade
Saturday, January 30 @ 5:30 pm

Be a part of the Torchlight Parade and encourage your neighbors to walk, bike and bus all year round. Participants will interact with the crowd by walking, biking or waving from inside the Twinkle Bus.

Bring illumination: We'll be modeling safe year-round walking, biking and busing, so light yourself up with anything bright or reflective you have! We'll have free blinky lights on hand to help you complete your look.

Be a part of it! Space is limited. E-mail laura@smart-trips.org before Tuesday, January 26 to express your interest.

In support of a state-wide Complete Streets policy

On February 4th the 2010 state legislative session will begin and we'll be advocating for the passage of a state-wide Complete Streets policy through our membership in the forty-member Minnesota Complete Streets Coalition.

If passed, such a policy would prescribe that all users of our streets be considered during the design or re-design of roadways. A similar policy is in the works at the local level for the City of Saint Paul.

In November of last year, St. Paul Smart Trips signed on in support of a draft Complete Streets report from Mn/DOT.

Winter bicycle counts - our digits are cold!

On three chilly days in December and January, St. Paul Smart Trips volunteers counted bicycle and pedestrian traffic at various locations around St. Paul.

The counts are being conducted as part of the Non-Motorized Pilot Program that Bike Walk Twin Cities is conducting to get more people biking and waking for transportation more often.

Measuring non-motorized traffic is important for the region because it helps to inform planners and decision makers about the need to provide for pedestrians and bicyclists in all transportation projects.

Since we began in July of last year, over 20 shifts have been filled by St. Paul Smart Trips volunteers (thanks!).

Counts are typically done the second Tuesday of the month, and last for two hours. Consider volunteering and help bicyclists and pedestrians be counted!

Learn about volunteering: Call Laura Baum at 651-224-8555 x21 or e-mail laura@smart-trips.org
