Behind all of the excitement of the Commuter Challenge and Bike Walk Week last season, we've been busy laying the groundwork for a dynamic new city-wide organization called St. Paul Smart Trips.

We kicked off with our new name and logo at this year's Bike Walk to Work Day on May 14. Council Members Melvin Carter and Russ Stark, former Director of the Midway TMO and a current board member, rode in by bike and gave a great video interviews about the benefits of biking.

As a new organization, we're hard at work integrating all of the strengths from the two merged organizations into a cohesive team to serve this great city. In doing so, we're drawing on the Midway TMO's strengths in working with local residents and communities as well as the numerous employer relationships that the St. Paul TMO has cultivated over the years.

Our first project as a new organization launched last month to deliver options for getting around to residents of the Summit-University neighborhood. The program is called Smart Trips Summit-U and focuses on putting custom-assembled resources and tools into the hands of those who request them. So far we've taken orders for over 300 "Smart Trips Kits" and are busy out delivering them by bicycle with the help of volunteer ambassadors. Check out the free events we have scheduled - you don't need to live in the neighborhood to attend!

Come see our new digs:  We're on the skyway level of the Alliance Bank Center in Downtown St. Paul (see a map). Stop by, or wait for our open house in August!

Avoid Congestion This Summer

Google Traffic PredictorWhen you need to drive, save yourself the frustration and fuel costs of idling in traffic. A new tool in Google Maps allows you to plan your trips to avoid heavy traffic times or know when to choose to walk, bike, bus, or share a ride.

Tip: Click on the 'Traffic' button and then "change" to view traffic patterns over time.

Proposed Transit Hikes

Bus fare hikeAt a time of record rideship, Metro Transit is proposing a fare increase to cover a $15 million shortfall in their operating budget. The increase is being proposed because their primary source of funding comes from sales taxes on motor vehicles sales which are in decline.

Transportation Planning Begins in
Anticipation of September's RNC

GOP elephant on wheelsIn the months leading up to the Republican National Convention, St. Paul Smart Trips will be working with employers to develop custom tailored transportation plans. By recommending worksite-appropriate options for commuters, we'll help you keep your organization running smoothly during the heavy demand on our transportation systems.
