Mississippi River Trail

Seen these signs along the Mississippi? Follow them far enough and you could wind up in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Mississippi River Trail (MRT) runs 3,000 miles from its headwaters in Lake Itasca State Park all the way to the Gulf. The trail is part of an envisioned US Bicycle Route System.

Mn/DOT is currently seeking feedback on refining, identifying gaps and marketing the route.

2010 Bike Walk Week recap

Bike Walk Week, held last month from June 5-11, saw a record number of participants hit the streets on bicycles or their own two feet. With participation up 34% and a larger schedule of events, it was the biggest Twin Cities Bike Walk Week to date!

More than 7,000 people registered to participate in Bike Walk Week, and more than 1,000 attended celebration locations. Bike Walk events were also held in Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud.

Stay tuned for more information about a fall Bike Walk Week in October featuring a Bike Walk to School Day.

Marshall Parking Ban update

A car on Marshall Ave. ticketed last winter for parking during prohibited hours.

Good news came last month for winter bicyclists who use Marshall Avenue between Mississippi River Boulevard and Hamline Avenue. The parking restrictions put in place last year along Marshall have been extended for another year with the intent that cars can park closer to the curb and bike lanes cleared more effectively of snow and ice.

St. Paul Smart Trips and the Union Park District Council held a community meeting in April that over thirty people attended and voiced their opinions for and against the continuation of the ban.

Public Works staff commented that  the pilot of the initiative would have likely worked better if it hadn't been for the mix of unusually heavy snow and rainfall with freezing temperatures. It was also cleared up that though the ban is weekly it is not financially possible to plow Marshall at that interval.

The Union Park District Council voted last month to continue the parking ban.

Send a thank you to the Union Park District Council for continuing the ban. Drop an e-mail to info@unionparkdc.org.

Annual youth bicycle writing / video contest

From havefunbiking.com:

Do you know a budding writer or videographer eager to share their bike story? Maybe it was the first time they rode solo, an experience on an organized ride, a new trail section in the neighborhood or the frustrations of riding safely from home to the store.

To further bicycling and gain a larger audience of bicyclists the 'Share the Road' Campaign of Minnesota and havefunbiking.com will help budding writers and videographers via its annual Youth Writing / Video Contest.

Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in grades 6 -12 for any bike related, poetry and prose categories. In 2010 two $50 cash prizes will be awarded each month, one for the best written and the other for the best video submission.

Eligible entries must be published during the calendar year 2010.
Submissions accepted through December 27, 2010.

Meet Jim Glatzmaier, volunteer extraordinaire

Jim Glatzmaier has become a fixture of our bike and pedestrian counts. Once a month volunteers and staff from St. Paul Smart Trips count passing cyclists and pedestrians at four locations, plotting changes over time. No one is more dedicated to the counts than Jim.

Jim is a Union Park resident who retired from Travelers Insurance a couple of years ago. As an avid cyclist and walker he realized the bicycle and pedestrian counts were a good fit when he started volunteering a year ago. He feels that the counts are useful because they demonstrate what infrastructure most effectively helps bicyclists and pedestrians.

From his regular post at the corner of Summit and Fairview, Jim observes biking and walking patterns changing over the year. Whether you're passing by his post in the dead of winter or the middle of summer keep an eye out for Jim and wave hello!
