Minnesota adopts Complete Streets Law
 Photos by Minnesota Environmental Partnership
Adapted from the National Complete Streets Coalition:
On May 15, Governor Tim
Pawlenty signed the Omnibus Transportation Bill (SF-2540), which
includes
complete streets language requiring future planning,
implementation and operation of roads to consider all
users:
"Complete streets considers the needs of motorists, pedestrians, transit users and vehicles, bicyclists, and commercial and emergency vehicles moving along and across roads, intersections, and crossings in a manner that is sensitive to the local context..." From Bill SF-2540
Minnesotans have been
rallying around complete streets for over a year and actions over the
last month reinforced that support. On April 26, a Complete Streets
Rally and Parade outside the Capitol Building delivered 5,000 postcards to Governor Pawlenty asking him to sign complete
streets legislation.

Smart Trips Neighborhoods coming to Highland Park

Our Smart Trips Neighborhoods program kicks off this month in the Highland Park Neighborhood of St. Paul.
This highly individualized program targets one St. Paul neighborhood each year and gives residents (12,000 in Highland!) the opportunity to order a customized "Smart Trips Kit."
Our Smart Trips Kits are specially
tailored to encourage people to make short trips by foot, bike or bus instead of by car. The free kit is delivered by bike, brimming with resources and tools like a custom transit trip plan, a pedometer and a neighborhood coupon book and illustrated map.
The program lasts through the fall and participants receive helpful newsletters and are invited to attend free bike rides, walks and workshops in their neighborhood. The neighborhood has set a goal to try to get 12% of households to participate.
This year marks our third year of running this program. In our first year we increased biking and walking by
33% in the Summit-U neighborhood!

Update: Jefferson Bikeway Approved
Thanks for making your voices heard!
After months of public meetings and discussions, on May 5 the city council approved the Jefferson Ave Bikeway project by a 6-1 vote. At the public hearing prior to the vote the vast majority of speakers spoke in favor of the project.
Starting this summer, Jefferson Ave will undergo a variety of changes to make it safer and more pleasant for cyclists and pedestrians. Some key elements include: - Trial of a traffic diverter at Cleveland
- Destination and directional signs throughout the corridor
- Share the road pavement markings in several locations
- Dynamic speed signs (between Snelling & Lexington Pkwy)
- Bike lanes from Lexington to West 7th Street
- Sidewalk installation between Lexington & Victoria (south side)
- Reduced speed from 40 to 30 between Lexington & Victoria
