New parking regulations to help curb delays, hazards

Photo by Rob / via Flickr

On November 1 new parking regulations went into effect along Marshall Avenue to allow for improved snow clearing and safer, more convenient access to the roads by all users.

Prior to this change Marshall Avenue was only cleared thoroughly during snow emergencies. Light snowfalls were allowed to accumulate and effectively narrowed the roads by pushing parked cars farther and farther from the curb.

With cars parked in the bike lanes, both bicyclists and pedestrians getting in to their parked cars had little choice but to put themselves out into traffic.

Under the new rules, drivers parking on Marshall Avenue between Mississippi River Boulevard and Hamline Avenue will need to avoid parking along the south side of the street on Tuesdays and the north side of the street on Wednesdays. The new regulations will be enforced year round from 2am - 7 am.

In September St. Paul Smart Trips and the Union Park District Council organized a meeting along with the City of Saint Paul to seek community input on the proposed regulation. Union Park residents in attendance were unanimously in support of the new regulations.

Questions? For questions on the new parking regulations call 651-266-6118 or e-mail paul.st.martin@ci.stpaul.mn.us.
