Metro Transit fare increases

Bus fare hikeFares for all regional buses and trains increased on Oct. 1.

The TransitWorks! discount was eliminated as well, but morning rush-hour time will not be extended as was earlier proposed.

The fare increase will help reduce a projected $15 million budget shortfall for 2009 due to the cost of fuel and lower than expected revenue from motor vehicle sales taxes - a major source of transit funding.

The fare increase will impact the cost of Metropass at the employer's next contract renewal. The new cost for participating employers will be $76 per month for each Metropass.

Please check with your Metropass administrator to learn when that cost will change, or contact Damian Goebel at 651-224-8555 x24.

Safety in numbers: the surprising solution to biking safely is getting more bikes on the road

In response to the recent string of bicyclist fatalities in the Twin Cities, there have been a number of articles about the dangers of bicycling.

But according to research gathered by St. Paul non-profit Transit for Livable Communities the safest thing is to get more bicycles on the road. "As more people ride bicycles on our streets, they're actually less likely to be injured in traffic accidents," says Steve Clark, Bicycling and Walking Program Manager at Transit for Livable Communities. "Overall, when motorists see more cyclists and pedestrians, they adjust their driving behaviors."

With a higher number of bicycling deaths this season, many are questioning whether cars and bicycles can safely co-exist on city streets. Research confirms that as cycling participation increases, a cyclist is far less likely to collide with a motor vehicle or suffer injury and death. It's not simply because there are fewer cars on the roads, but because motorists drive more safely when they see more cyclists around.

RNC efforts a success!

During the RNC, we worked with the City to provide temporary bike parking, helped out with the Freewheelin' bike sharing and held an open house to help inform individuals and employers of their options for getting around.

In a follow up survey of those we worked with, nearly half reported that they or others at their organization used a different mode to get to work during the convention.
