Smart
Trips Union Park delivers options to residents

Event partners have included Sibley Bike Depot, Now Bikes
& Fitness, local author Susan Price, the National Park Service,
Transit for Livable Communities and Boehm's Bike Shop.
In July we began an innovative transportation options
program
in the Union Park district of St. Paul. The program, called Smart Trips
Union Park, aids individuals and families in making fewer trips by car
and more by bike, foot and bus (smart trips!).
Residents of the Union Park district (Merriam Park,
Snelling Hamline and Lexington-Hamline) have been receiving newsletters
full of useful tips and have been attending rides, walks and workshops
to incorporate these new ways of getting around into their routines.

Every household that participates in the free program is
entitled to receive a "Smart Trips Kit," consisting of a
reusable shopping bag filled with materials and free gifts that support
making smart trips. A typical kit might include neighborhood walking
maps, a reflective leg band, a pedometer and a customized transit itinerary.
What goes in the kit is totally up to the individual. Once the order is
received, Smart Trips staff and volunteer ambassadors build the kits
and deliver them by bicycle.
Kit orders are being accepted through the end of the month, but more
events to celebrate the changing of the seasons are being planned for
October and November.
Attend an event: Events are free and are open to all, see our full events calendar online.

Snelling
median ped-safety project approved

On September 2, after conducting a lively public hearing, the Saint
Paul City Council approved a project to improve pedestrian safety on
Snelling Avenue between St. Clair Avenue and Grand Avenue.
The
project will involve redefining on-street parking and turn lanes and
most significantly the addition of medians with pedestrian crossings to
facilitate the staged crossing of the highly trafficked Snelling
Avenue.
The project has been in the works for four years, and though it was
contentious among some neighbors, it is a testament to the cooperation
of many partners to improve pedestrian safety. Among the stakeholders
calling this a major victory are the Macalester College High Winds
Fund, Macalester-Groveland District Council, Mn/DOT, and the City of
Saint Paul.
Your voices matter: Read letters from a group of citizens who
helped refocus the debate through a successful letter
writing campaign.

Marshall
snow plowing / signage community meeting

Tuesday, September 15
6:30-8pm
Flannery Construction, 1375 St. Anthony Ave., St. Paul
Union Park District Council and St. Paul Smart Trips are co-hosting a
community meeting to address the issues of snow plowing Marshall
Avenue's bike and parking lanes. The plan that will be discussed
involves banning on-street parking on each side of the street one night
each week during the winter months, at which time the parking and bike
lanes would be plowed.
This meeting is free and open to the public. Please come
and share your insights, ideas and concerns. Representatives from Saint
Paul Public Works and Saint Paul City Council are looking for feedback
and will be available to answer questions.

One of the top five barriers that we hear from people who
haven't tried biking to work is that they're concerned about staying
clean. So are we, so this month our Executive Director, Jessica Treat,
tried out a new product that claims to help with just that.

Jessica commutes three or more days per week by bike and
over all, found the spray and washcloth wipe down to be refreshing and
quick. She noted that the washcloth and towel dried best if they were
allowed to air dry, so for some finding a place at work to do this
could be a challenge.
She advised to use it with care on the face because of it's strong
vapors (witch hazel, alcohol, peppermint and grapefruit oil), but
hasn't yet determined whether regular use might dry out the skin.
