Partnership Doubles Number of Bike Parking Spaces
During Republican National Convention
Earlier last month the City of St. Paul announced that bicycles would not be allowed to travel or park inside the vehicle restricted area surrounding the Xcel Energy Center.
Soon after this news, parking lot closures and relocations were released, but accommodations for one mode of travel that's extremely helpful in reducing congestion was missing.
In partnership with the City of Saint Paul, and Twin Cities-based Dero
Bike Rack Company, St. Paul Smart Trips has, at the time of this going out, added 238 spaces to the 200 spaces
downtown not affected by the vehicle restriction area.
The free public racks will be in place through Friday, Sept. 5, and are spread out over six sites in downtown:
• Walnut St. between W. 7th St. and Smith Ave.
• 7A Ramp
• Robert St. Ramp (7th St. entrance)
• Block 19 Ramp (7th St. entrance)
• Lowertown Ramp (Sibley St. entrance)
• St. Paul Farmer's Market
(Broadway St., Wall St. and E 5th St sides)

Free Bike Rentals During RNC Show What Bike Sharing Could be Like in St. Paul
1,000 bikes are being made available for free rental in the Twin Cities through a partnership between Humana and Bikes Belong.
The bikes are available to both the public and delegates of the Republican National Convention from September 1 - 4 from 7 am - 7 pm. Come say hi to us and imagine what St. Paul would be like with a bike-sharing program (Minneapolis is already making plans).
The Democratic National Convention in Denver has been a huge success with 5,900 trips made accounting for 26,000 miles traveled that otherwise might have been in automobiles.
Pedal for Gustav Relief: Humana will donate $10 for every mile ridden during the convention. Learn more.
To rent a bike: View rental locations (pdf) and pre-register online.

Central Corridor Light Rail Advocacy
Last month we shared with you some of our advocacy efforts surrounding bringing the Central Corridor Light Rail to St. Paul.
Jessica Treat, Executive Director of St. Paul Smart Trips, submitted a
number of comments regarding the station area planning, most of which were
adopted into the plan. Comments dealt with these key themes:
? Covered bike racks and lockers to accommodate the variety of trips people make (shopping, commuting, etc.)
? Wider sidewalks and important sidewalk elements
? Thoughtful planning for placement of bus connections
Station area plans supplement the Central Corridor Development Strategy (CCDS) by providing more detailed planning for the areas within approximately 1/4 mile of the seven currently proposed University Avenue stations.

Introducing the Twin Cities Bike Walk Ambassadors
The Bike Walk Ambassador program launched last month to encourage people in Minneapolis and the 13 neighboring communities to bike and walk more, and drive less. The educational and outreach program is run by of the City of Minneapolis in partnership with the Bike Walk Twin Cities initiative from Transit for Livable Communities. Invite the Ambassadors to join St. Paul Smart Trips at your organization's next commuting or green event. The Ambassadors are available to give presentations, lead safety/user clinics, and host events year-round. Together we can help your group learn how to reach destinations by foot or bike with ease. Contact deepti@smart-trips.org to learn more about the services St. Paul Smart Trips can offer. |
