Dear Councilmembers,

I’m writing on behalf of St. Paul Smart Trips to express our support for the proposed bicycle lane additions on both Western Avenue and Oakdale Avenue as part of the City’s mill and overlay program. St. Paul Smart Trips is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that improves access and mobility for those who travel in and around St. Paul. This project is also endorsed by St. Paul Women on Bikes, a Smart Trips program that works to make riding a bike in St. Paul safer and easier for women, children, and families.

We are encouraged to see city leaders moving forward with the plans set forth in the St. Paul Bicycle Plan to add important bicycle connections to St. Paul’s streets each year during regularly scheduled mill and overlay projects. These projects are easy to complete, cost effective and make a great deal of difference for making riding a bike safe and easy in our city.

Both Western and Oakdale Avenues connect people to housing, jobs, goods and services, but neither are great for making those connections on your bicycle. By completing these projects, the city will be taking a step closer to completing the vision set forth in the Bicycle Plan to complete a network for safe, easy biking in St. Paul for all users, especially the most vulnerable.

We support both projects as proposed and look forward to seeing them move forward later this year.

Sincerely,

Jessica Treat
