MPCA gets new, covered bike parking

Bike_Melissa_Neal_KurtLast month, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) had a brand new bike shelter installed. This new bike parking option gives people who want to bike commute some extra protection from the elements without having to rent one of the agency’s bike lockers. They were also successfully able to get new bike parking installed at the front of the building and are having several old bike lockers replaced.

MPCA used an innovative approach to work with agency and building management to advocate for the new bike parking. They, along with several other state agencies in the same complex, have created a group called the Lafayette Park Commuter Team to work on transportation issues affecting all of the tenants of the Layfayette Park complex, located near East 7th Street and Lafayette Road.

All told, several improvements have been made to expand the existing bike parking at the St. Paul Office that include:

  • Capacity for up to 8 additional bikes located in front of the building by the loading dock
  • A new bike shelter for up to 10 bikes located behind the building
  • Coming this spring, 30 new bike lockers will be installed behind the building.

The Lafayette Park Commuter Team is hoping these new bike parking options will expand opportunities for biking to work.
